Squirrel Meadows, Telford & Wrekin Council

Case Study

The Telford & Wrekin Council's Squirrel Meadow revamp project showcased Wicksteed Leisure's commitment to creating inclusive and socially interactive play spaces. This comprehensive project involved replacing all existing play equipment, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity and social interaction, as per the council's requirements.

To ensure inclusivity, various pieces of play equipment were installed. This included the Swirl Inclusive Roundabout, designed to accommodate wheelchair users, and the Basket and Tango Swing seats. Sensory panels featuring Sign Language, Braille, and a Communication Board were incorporated into multiple units and fencing, enhancing accessibility and educational value.

For toddlers, we installed the Nursery Rhymes Multiplay Unit, which featured a Sign Language Board alongside age-appropriate equipment like the Inclusive Squirrel-themed Sit-In Springy. Older children were catered to with the Lancelot Castle Multiplay Unit, offering engaging play experiences and an inclusive play option, the Simulator Roundabout, featuring chunky handles and back support, offering spinning and rocking capabilities.

Recognising the need for diverse play experiences, we also created a quiet zone, complete with a Mini Swing and Toadstools for seating.

The playground's cohesive Squirrel theme, with a focus on green and yellow colours to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings, contributed to a visually appealing and immersive play environment. To add a fun touch, we finished off the project with a Thermographic Squirrel-themed Hopscotch game.
