Wicksteed Creates Playground for World’s Tallest Building
Leading outdoor play and fitness expert Wicksteed Playgrounds has just completed an exciting and challenging project to create a bespoke, themed play area for the Burj Khalifa in Dubai – the world’s tallest building! The play area is being used as the private nursery of Burj Khalifa’s residents and offers a wide variety of play experiences for all ages and abilities.
The design team at Wicksteed has spent several months working closely with one of the most prestigious developers in Dubai, Emaar, to create the bespoke play scheme. The scheme takes inspiration from the beautiful, artificial archipelagos that adorn the Dubai coastline and the ‘Y’ shape which is synonymous with Burj Khalifa. References to the tallest building in the world have been incorporated into the design throughout, including a bespoke climbing wall, which makes a strong connection to the unique building.
Wicksteed excels at providing solutions to the most complex issues. Working with the client and architect, there were several technical and load bearing complications to overcome on this particular project. A mound had never been created on top of a car park within a building before and to ensure correct load bearings, Wicksteed used slightly varied materials from its usual installation method in the construction of the play mound. The design team at Wicksteed addressed the issue of the requirement for each piece of play equipment to be surface fixed by creating individual drawings for each item to accommodate the installation method.
“We are delighted to have worked with one of Dubai’s most prestigious developers on this challenging project which has now been successfully completed. As one of the experts in our field, international recognition for our creative and bespoke play areas has taken us to many countries and different environments around the world. The quality of our play equipment and thorough after-sales support has met with and exceeded the high expectations of our client and, as a result, we are being considered for an even bigger play area at the Burj Khalifa,” says Stuart Wetherell, Sales Director at Wicksteed.
The Burj Khalifa, known as the Burj Dubai before its inauguration, is a mega-tall skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It has a roof height of 828m and with antenna included is 829.8m, making it the tallest building and the tallest structure in the world. The Y-shaped tripartite floor geometry is designed to optimise residential and hotel space.
