New Play Area for Residents
Wicksteed has brought some fun and adventure to a rural Northamptonshire village this summer through the stalwart efforts of the local community and its volunteer groups. An ageing play area in the village of Boddington was identified by the local Parish Council as one that was a key priority for refurbishment. From a competitive tender process, Wicksteed’s design was favoured to create a play area that encompassed activities for all ages and abilities and had a ‘wow’ factor to make it a play destination for visitors from further afield.
The local community formed a working group which included the Parish Council, Boddington Village Hall Committee Members and Friends of Boddington (a group of volunteers who are working with HS2 for the benefit of the village). The entire village community was involved in the planning process to find out what local children, parents and residents wanted from their new playground.
This was the first play area to be installed and partially funded with £75k by the new HS2 train project – given to help those communities who are and will be affected by the proposed HS2 rail line. Additional funding also came from Boddington Parish Council and Boddington Village Hall.
Wicksteed worked closely with the working group to ensure it delivered a play area that is sympathetic to its rural surroundings, with a bespoke colour scheme and timber elements, and provides play experiences for toddlers through to teens. Inclusivity was at the heart of the design and includes a wheelchair accessible roundabout, an extra wide slide and a basket seat swing. The ‘wow’ elements come in the form of an impressive Tree House centrepiece and a fun zip-wire with a trim trail inter-connecting different pieces of equipment within the play area.
“We wanted the playground to be an adventure to encourage the children to flow between the elements and where children could be challenged to try new things.
We feel that this project shows what a community can achieve when volunteer groups work together to an agreed and common vision based on full consultation with the residents. Wicksteed has been a great partner for us in this both through the planning and the construction of the playground and we wanted a supplier who could commit to our very stringent timescales and could deliver the whole project effectively.
We have been overwhelmed by the positive comments and the numbers using the playground, since it opened on 11th August, and it has become a real social centre for the area. We believe that it has already demonstrated the feeling of a ‘destination playground’,” commented Caroline Sheers, Chairman Boddington Village Hall Committee.
This is the initial stage in a major project to create an exciting sports and recreation facility in Boddington and there are plans for a MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area) and bike/fitness trail as well as improvements to the football field and car parking to enhance the already very popular Village Hall.
