Wicksteed Designs Inclusive Outdoor Gym for Queen Alexandra College

Students at Queen Alexandra College in Birmingham can get fit & active this summer thanks to a new range of outdoor fitness equipment, designed and installed by Wicksteed Playgrounds.  Queen Alexandra College is an independent specialist college of further education with 275 students of variable disabilities aged 16-25yrs.

Wicksteed installed 14 pieces, in a striking black & yellow colour scheme, from its award-winning Fitness Legacy Zone (FLZ) which has been designed in conjunction with sports academics and fitness professionals and is fully compliant with the latest British Safety Standard BS EN 16630:2015.  The range is ideal for teens and adults and caters for all levels of physical and mental ability and fitness – from the complete novice through to the experienced athlete.

Wicksteed Sales Director, Stuart Wetherell, commented, “We were delighted to have been chosen to design and supply the new FLZ scheme at Queen Alexandra College and, from its positive reception, we hope it will continue to help the students and staff to keep fit & active.  We celebrated an important milestone of reaching our Centenary this year and, although our background is outdoor play equipment, the FLZ was a natural fit with our years of design and manufacturing expertise.”

Regular exercise has been proven to provide physical, mental and social benefits as well as helping to reduce stress levels and boost the immune system. The average adult should do at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity as well as strength training exercises to make a huge improvement to their overall fitness and health.  The guideline is to aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day but what’s important is to make regular physical activity part or your lifestyle. Outdoor gym

Sarah Caldwell, from Queen Alexandra College is delighted with the provision and said: “Having the equipment is a fantastic addition to the facilities we offer and our students have really enjoyed getting used to the equipment.  It has been factored into some group fitness sessions and many students have also been using it during their breaks and directed study lessons as a way to get some exercise whilst also having fun! We hope students will use it even more during the summer term and it will no doubt feature in our annual summer games competition, too!”

QAC offer courses for young people aged 16-25yrs as well as employment focused and supported living programmes.  Students can develop their academic, social, employment and independent skills through individualised programmes. www.qac.ac.uk
